John Denham sent this letter to constituents about government help during the economic downturn:
Dear Constituent
People the world over are facing tougher times. Governments across the world are taking action to get their economies going and to provide help to those who need it. Doing nothing doesn’t help.
Labour is providing real help now to families and businesses. Labour is taking action to stop short term job loss turning into the long term unemployment it did when the Conservatives were last in power. Labour is making more opportunities for young people by expanding apprenticeships. And Labour wants to prevent people who lose their jobs from also losing their homes.
That's why we say 'invest not cut'. And that doing nothing doesn't help.
You may have seen that David Cameron’s local Conservatives have set out his plans for Southampton: to stop free swimming for our kids, to oppose free school meals, to privatise the crematorium and to close care homes for the elderly. When the local Conservatives wanted to win the Council election last May, they did not tell you what they really planned to do.
In contrast, Labour is giving real help now by cutting income tax for 22 million basic rate taxpayers and cutting VAT. Labour has raised this year’s Winter Fuel Payment to £400 for over-80s households and £250 for the over-60s. Pensioners are also receiving an additional £60. Labour has increased working tax credit, child tax credit and child benefit.
Do you think Cameron’s Conservatives are bad for Southampton? Please let me know by email to john@johndenham.org.uk.
Yours sincerely
John Denham MP
