John Denham has met Southampton’s Youth MP, Alice Weavers.  Alice is a Year 10 student at Sholing College of Technology and John Denham travelled there to discuss her policies for the City.

The Youth MP is elected by young people in the City and Alice recently joined her counterparts from all over the country in a debate held in the House of Lords.

Among the issues the two MPs discussed were Alice’s campaign to reduce bus fares for young people in Southampton.  Alice said “When I visit London I can travel on the buses free. On the Isle of Wight there is a flat fare for young people of 50p.  It’s much more expensive for young people to use buses in Southampton.”

John Denham gave Alice some advice on how to run a successful campaign and has offered to help her in her contacts with the bus companies and the City Council.

John Denham said “I congratulate Alice on her election as Youth MP for Southampton.  We had a very interesting discussion and I look forward to seeing how successful her campaign on bus fares is.”

John Denham has also agreed to attend a Southampton Youth Parliament meeting later this year.
