Labour MPs back Southampton Shopmobility

Shopmobility electric and manual wheelchairs and powered scooters to people with limited mobility, enabling them to get out and about in the city centre.  The scheme is under-threat due to the Conservative-led council’s proposal to cut its funding.

John said:

“Since it was revealed that the council was planning to cut funding to Shopmobility I’ve been inundated with letters and emails from constituents concerned that if Shopmobility wasn’t around they’d be left unable to get out and about in the city centre, meaning their quality of life would be seriously affected.  For this reason I’m urging the council to reconsider their decision and keep Shopmobility open.”

Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test, said:

“The Tories say disabled people can make do with a limited shopmobility service that only covers West Quay.  But that could mean they would no longer be able to use scooters to access the Royal South Hants or anywhere else in town- not to mention the difficulty in getting to West Quay in the first place if you don’t have a car.  It’s an extraordinarily ill-considered and out of touch proposal and we will be doing everything we can to fight it.”

“The whole way the Conservatives have gone about this process is extremely dubious.  They claim they are giving more money to voluntary organisations, but if you look at the small print there’s actually going to be a big cut later in the year.”
