John launches "Save Our Sure Start" petition

John Denham has begun signing up mums and dads to his “Save Our Sure Start” campaign.  The petition is in response to the Tories’ threat to cut £200 million from the national Sure Start budget, which could see up to one in five centres close their doors for good.

John said, "Creating Sure Start has been one of the Labour Government’s proudest achievements.  The centres we’ve got across Southampton help thousands of families every day – giving children the best possible start in life and changing lives for the better.

 “Mums and dads are always shocked on the door-step to hear the Tories want to cut Sure Start services.  They know that’s not right, I know that’s not right, and that’s why I’ve started this petition.”

 John Denham and his team will be campaigning to save Sure Start throughout the election campaign – collecting signatures on the streets, on the door-steps and outside Sure Start centres themselves.
