The new government’s decision to scrap Southampton’s secondary school building programme is devastating. It will harm our children’s education and, in the short term, cost hundreds of construction jobs. Labour’s Building Schools for the Future programme gave us the chance to offer all our children 21st century schools. It’s what they deserve. But it was always about more than better buildings. It was an essential part of the effort to improve the city’s school performance. The whole reorganisation of secondary schools which started two years ago depends on this investment. Now we have schools like Bitterne Park left too small...

Boxing Day used to be the centre of the fox hunting calendar, and this year’s is the fifth since the Bill to ban hunting with dogs was introduced.

The ban is making a real difference. Since it came into force, dozens of prosecutions have been brought under the Act, and the supposed dire effects on rural communities have not come to pass.

However, the Hunting Act is under threat if the Tories have their way. They have made it clear that they want to get rid of it as soon as possible, with their “animal welfare” spokesperson claiming that...

Imagine going to withdraw money from your bank account and finding none there; your salary not being paid; your debit card not working at the supermarket. All of this could have happened if we’d had a Conservative government last year.

Gordon Brown stepping in to save the banks from meltdown has now universally been recognised as the right move. Yet the Tories bitterly opposed the action; they would have let Northern Rock and Bradford and Bingly go to the wall, and left millions of families to sink or swim.

Labour recognises that reckless bankers should never again be in a...

In tough times, the public deserve honesty from politicians about the choices they face in the next General Election. With the close of conference season, and the gearing up of the General Election campaign, dividing lines have begun to emerge:

Labour believes that public spending keeps people in work. With people in work there is less strain on the benefit system and more money kept in the economy, making recovery much more likely. Only once the economic recovery is securely underway can we afford to reduce borrowing. This is the approach to recovery adopted not only by Labour, but by...

The Future Jobs Fund is part of more than £3bn investment in extra skills and training for jobseekers, which has enabled the Government to be able to guarantee work or training to every 18 to 24 year old at risk of becoming long term unemployed. The Fund, though only announced in the Budget, is open for business and already sports organisations have pledged to create 5,000 jobs for young people. You can...

Last week I visited the North East, the North West, the Midlands and London. I talked to people who were leading their regions and looking to the way out of recession. They all faced real problems, as we here do. But they were all upbeat and determined to stress their potential and strengths. Then I came home and read my favourite local paper. I find the Conservative Deputy Leader of the City Council - a man who should be talking up our city and attracting investment to Southampton - delighting in talking the city down. He says the...

I’m sure we all congratulate swimmer Rebecca Adlington on her two splendid Olympic golds. There were also excellent performances by her colleagues in Team GB. Everyone connected to the British Swimming Team believes that, in 2012, we’ll do even better thanks to the support given to swimming by the Government and the National Lottery. Since 1997 almost £250 million of public money has been invested in swimming - more than any other sport. Over the last three years, more swimming pools have opened than closed. So the pools are there, we now need to make sure that...

In the budget last year, the Government introduced a major simplification of the tax system. The basic rate was cut from 22p to 20p-the lowest rate in 75 years. Allowances for pensioners over the age of 65 were increased, as were the Working Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit. As a result of these changes 16 million households have gained and 600,000 more pensioners will pay no tax at all. The changes announced in 2007 and in this year’s budget will lift around half a million children out of poverty. But many people were worried about...

It is clearly a tactic of the City’s ruling Conservative Councillors to blame their proposed cuts on central government. Councillor Royston Smith’s recent “In My View” was the latest example. They want to give the idea that Southampton doesn’t do well in the support it gets from central government because “Labour has diverted the money up north.”
So let’s take a look at the facts. First of all, there has been an above inflation increase in the amount of money given to local authorities in each of the 10 years Labour has been in power. This compares with a below...

The public spending and tax plans set out last week by my colleague Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, show that Labour understands the aspirations of people and will make a real difference to the lives of local families and pensioners.

It’s vital that we continue to invest in our public services in Southampton. That’s why I’m pleased that Alistair’s plans give more money to local schools so that all of our kids can get a decent start in life. The extra investment in the NHS will mean that waiting times can be reduced further to 18 weeks, as...

This is my first In My View since becoming Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills and I’d like to talk about education. We have just seen record breaking GCSE results in Southampton and, although I am concerned that our results are still not improving as fast as comparable areas, this is very welcome. But what do these successful young people do now?
Since 1997 the number of students entering higher education has increased by 230,000 and funding for higher education institutions has risen by 20% in real terms. But too many of our young people in Southampton do...
